Chana Dal

Ingredients


  • 1 cup chana dal (3:1 water to chana - boil until it starts to get tender, or put in a pressure cooker)
  • 2 small onions (diced)
  • 4 tomatoes (blended)
  • 5 garlic cloves (minced)
  • 1 small piece of ginger (About 1/2 as much as the garlic) (minced)
  • cilantro for topping

Spices


  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp red chili
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 tsp coriander powder
  • 2 tsp curry powder
  • small pinch Hing
  • 1/4 tsp Mango powder

Steps


  1. boil chana dal with 3 cups of water until they get tender
  2. cook tomato and onion gravy
    1. cook cumin seeds for 15-30 seconds to brown them
    2. add the onions, and a tbsp or so of water to water sauté them for 4-5 minutes
    3. add garlic and ginger - continue sautéing for a 30-45 seconds
    4. blend tomatoes in a blender, and then add them to the mix
    5. add spices and cook down the mix until it becomes closer to a tomato paste consistency
  3. add chana dal and cooking water to the gravy and mix well (if more water is needed, add it but boil it first)
  4. boil down for 2-3 minutes, and then add cilantro to the top
